I’ve been told this release is great because of its “amazing alliteration”. Well all right, let’s see how good it actually is.

Opening. It worked well enough for what it was (black text with white outline overlaid on a shitty OP).

Rating: Good.

And this is where I stopped taking screenshots.

Ambition isn’t something you “strive” for.

Main Script.

Rosy like a rose? Wow, what wit.

Guide me, gg. I need to learn your secret to perfected prose.

I think it’s fair to assume this release will often be tripped up on tenses.

“When this bloom blossoms, only withering will await it.”

Pray tell, what makes this pretty miss a priestess? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestal_Virgin

You should have sought spell-check.

Keep guessing, gg.

Ah, there we are! Guess enough and you’ll eventually get it right.

Alas! A lack of English expertise exudes from even this very line. Trouble is, we’re only three minutes through this show. See why I said these subs would suck?

“Y-You are a demon, condemned to damnation for all eternity!”

You could find yourself writing rap songs with the alliteration skills displayed in these subs. “What rhymes with nigga? Hm… I know! Nigga! To the top of the charts!”

By using the plural “snakes” you already implied there would be more than one of them.

Hahaha, what hilarity! It’s funny because no normal person would say this! gg so genius!!

False; the word is “fell”.

Looks like gg never learned capitalization. Try this: http://e-learningforkids.org/Courses/EN/Capitalization/player.html

As a God -> As a god

I’m not so sure why plurals so perplex you. Perhaps you just need practice. Yahoo Answers can assist:

Dreadfully awful use of “drift”, but oh well. Drop “be expanded to” and you’ll be dandy.

More like this, moron: “Dare you attempt to defeat me with such lackluster legerity?!”

This took them two days to sub.

You should stop using words you don’t understand. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/foil

I have not nearly enough faces nor enough palms to properly respond to this screenshot.

We’re done here.

12 minutes into the episode and gg already fucked up 17 times in the main script. I’ve seen enough Hadena releases to know where this is going, so I’m not gonna waste any more time with alliterated responses to shitty subs I didn’t want to review in the first place. This release is bad and it can only get worse.

Anybody can alliterate when they’re using words they don’t understand. It’s a bit more difficult to do so when you have the vocabulary of someone who graduated elementary school, but it’s still not altogether impressive. Alliteration has to come out naturally because when you force it, it stands out in a bad way.

It’s clear that gg’s editor/TL went in way over their heads on this release. When you take out the alliteration, the only thing it has going for it is not being worse than Hadena… Though that’s only because their English skills are about equal (yes, really). But at least I can now believe gg’s JoJo isn’t a troll release. It’s simply done by people who are too stupid to realize how dumb they actually look.

I suppose bottom-feeders will get a kick out of these subs as they marvel over how intelligent gg’s staff must be to alliterate “regrettably” with “regrettable”, but anyone who knows how to spell either word without a dictionary handy would be better off avoiding gg’s releases for this show. Stick with Commie for JoJo.

  1. Since this evidently never had the luxury of a QC, it’s possible that he meant ‘foul my face’ and typoed. U and I are next to each other on a keyboard (<3).

  2. I’m actually sort of impressed with what gg were going for here. It’s just a shame they did such a piss-poor job of it.

    • Duwang is funnier, in my opinion.

Which is sorta sad because the concept and the execution of Duwang’s project for this is sort of forced, but that just tells you how awful of a job gg did at this.

    • It’s a decent base script, but that’s about all you get:

I’d personally have a hard time watching it without restyling the subs and running TPP. It could use some editing, too.

I think it’s a bit silly comparing it to the others though because it’s just some subs one guy made for his friends and decided to upload for everyone because why not.

  3. I highly recommend DeadFish subs for JJBA. Their translations are amazingly natural, the best I’ve ever seen from a subbing group.

      • I’m not. I honestly found their subs really good. Natural-sounding dialogue, no stilted or awkward/too literal translations, taking enough liberations to make it easy to read while still preserving the meaning of the original. I’d like to hear what you thought was wrong with their subs (maybe review them if you have time), but in my opinion, their subs are the best I’ve seen. Not just for JJBA, but for anime in general.

        • So I guess I was hoping this was indeed an honest misunderstanding. Gives me room to type.

Deadfish doesn’t make their own subs. They literally just take other groups’ work and make it shit by re-encoding it as hardsubbed mp4s.

If you go to their Nyaa page, you can see whose work they lifted. In this case, it’s likely Some-Stuffs whose work you’re praising, the basis of which is a Crunchyroll script. (If you’re talking about the first season, Deadfish grabbed Commie’s subs.)

As for the quality of “Deadfish” season 1 release, I did a review here: http://www.crymore.net/2012/12/02/fansub-review-commie-jojos-bizarre-adventure-episode-07/. I liked it fair enough myself.

          • Ahh, that I didn’t know. Well, whoever’s subs they stole were awesome.

It was the first season (Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency) that I watched DeadFish’s subs for. I’m watching Some-Stuffs for Stardust Crusaders.

            • Yup, those were Commie’s subs, back when they were hit-and-miss instead of nothing but the latter. Glad ya liked ’em, they were my favorite of the JoJo’s S1 options too.

              • There’s one thing that confuses me, though. In your review of Commie’s subs, the screenshots have the “kanji flashes”, as you call them, translated. But DeadFish’s subs (the ones I watched) had them left untranslated.

                • If you look at Deadfish’s releases, they say they grabbed Commie’s subs.

I’d have to imagine it’s just straight incompetence if they couldn’t figure out how to get the TS in there as well, since I’m pretty sure Commie never hardsubs.

                  • Well, there’s another thing I noticed – according to the screenshots in your Commie review, they translated “Hamon” as “Ripple”, but DeadFish’s subs left it untranslated as “Hamon”. Plus, DeadFish’s subs had a slightly different translation for the opening, and no subs at all for the ending. I’m not trying to say I don’t believe you, but there does seem to be a discrepancy.
