So someone mentioned that these BDs aren’t worth archiving and asked me to take a look at them.

Karaoke
This is the OP. Can’t read it very well? I can’t, either. And you know how there’s background vocals that sing alternate parts? Yeah, just putting them on the next line without differentiating them in any way doesn’t really work. The colors are meant to match a background much later in the OP, but look like shit any other place.
At least we have better color choices than the OP, but it’s still really plain.
And while the screenshot is up, that’s a comma splice.
Typesetting
This show is very typesetting-heavy, to the point where it’s as bad, if not worse, as a SHAFT show. Therefore, I expect top-tier typesetting from any group that decides they want to put enough effort into doing all of the signs in the first place.
First sign of the anime and nothing. Well, to be fair, her line was spoken just a moment ago, so I can forgive that.
Holy Hell, what are you doing? I know you’re not going to be able to match the embossed sign entirely, but Arial Round is NOT the answer. Ever.
Nor are half-assed \clip tags. Seriously, what are you doing here?
Why?
You know, there’s a gradient automation tool built in Aegisub.
The skewing is totally off. Also, there was plenty of room on the letter itself, so you didn’t have to place it up there.
Okay… I’ll let this slide.
But not this. First, the standard “needs more blur” argument definitely applies. Second, the shadow color doesn’t even match.
Look, if you’re going to typeset, at least try to match the stuff on the screen. This means fonts and colors at the minimum.
The typeset looks green compared to the actual sign.
Wow, I’ve never met someone with handwriting that good.
Oh, wait. It’s just Arial Round again.
Great job matching the fade times.
Where are you getting the idea that there’s a shadow at all? It’s just a second blurred border.
At least you tried to match the font, even if it failed miserably.
Where do you see rounded edges in the hiragana? Anywhere? Then you shouldn’t be using a rounded-edged font!
For the love of god, use a nice, not-rounded font here! Also, that shadow needs major blur. And it’s not that dark, either.
Well, this sign is actually not bad.
What. WHAT. I just don’t even know what to say about this one. Do you even know what alphas are?
Enough with the fucking Arial Round.
There might not have been much choice on these, but the screen is so cluttered and the color combos make my eyes hurt.
Oh, so here you decide to cover the kanji and typeset over the top? Why haven’t you done that all of the other times you didn’t have room to typeset a sign?
The text totally doesn’t match, but I appreciate the effort a lot more than…
Shoot me. Now.
That border is way too thick and dark. And the font is totally wrong, as usual!
The one time you decide to change up fonts, it’s one that totally doesn’t fit. What are you doing? Also, the movement on this sign is hilariously awful.
Did you \fax backwards or something?
Why…? Also, is that little spike in the shadow part of the box you used to cover up the kanji? Because it sticks out badly.
Um, is the sign floating in front of her or something? Just… fuck it all.
Thank fuck we’re at the end. Time to end the show with more terrible typesetting!
Also, you put spaces after commas.
Script
So with the failures in the typesetting, I was actually expecting a lot worse of a script than I got. Not to say the script was in any way good.
Putting aside the shitty alt styling, that text is a mouthful.
Paper is produced by combining vegetative fibers and an alkaline solution. It becomes a pulp that’s later dried and ends up as sheets.
For the love of god, make it two lines if you have to.
While perfectly valid, it’s awkward to read.
Anyway, now that we’ve cleared that up,
Anyway, now that we’ve settled things,
Anyway, since that’s been cleared up,
etc.
I believe the punctuation mark that you’re looking for is called an em dash. There are two ways to put an em dash in a script.
1. Use an actual em dash character.
2. Type {\fscx200}-{\r} where you want one.
Comma not necessary if you really want to write it that way. But I’d suggest:
After only running a decent time once?
Ah, the DVD way to do overlapping lines. Also known as the lazy as fuck way.
These lines are consecutive. No comma needed after the first one.
Elsie-chan, sentences start with capital letters. No, there’s nothing before this line except like a “Got it!” or something that definitely ends in an exclamation point or period or something.
No comma needed.
tl;dr: I was not told wrong. This is terrible for a BD release. The script isn’t too horrible, but the mistakes are really, really elementary. It’s the typesetting that absolutely ruins this release, though.
Thanks for the review. I’ve started to watch this show recently. Which subs should I go with for S2 (i’m almost finished with S1)?
Looks like Bakabt has Chihiro, and that’s the group I used. I think I qc’d an ep or two for them.
Hooly shit, now that’s what I call :effort: typesetting. At least be honest and {/an8} everything.
I kinda love how you’re trying to create your own reviewing style but it’s failing miserably
Well, what should I do? I’m neither mean nor snarky.
Stop, uh… stop failing miserably.
Practice makes better?
I have the Chihiro release for this. I wonder how that stacks up.
I watched Chihiro’s as well, and all i remember is that the karaoke overlap was terrible. I think D_S reviewed the TV version and bitched about it.
Thanks for the review!
Actually Color me subbed is a really good sub if you try watching it in HD I have my that is so clear and easy to read
They totally missed a trick with “Paper Only Knows”. In Japanese, “paper” and “god” are homophones. It’s not directly translatable, but they could have at least gone for “Card Only Knows”.
