[ARR] Memolu in the Pointed Hat (VHS)

I have no fucking idea why someone wanted me to review this.

So here we have an old VHS rip. At least, I think it’s a VHS rip. You see, everything kind of wobbles, including the subs, so I really think this is a VHS rip.

The point of this review was to judge the quality of ARR, but I don’t think they really had anything to do with the subs. I think they’re official subs that were on the source, so I have no fucking idea what the point of this was.

Also, I only reviewed the first 30 minutes because I wanted to go off and play PSP while the rest played.

Filesize: 466mb for 70 minutes.
English: American English, no honorifics, Western name order

Because this is an old VHS rip, there’s no point separating out into the normal categories. I’ll just put all the screenies in order.

Uh, okay. That font at the top totally doesn’t work at all. I’ll assume that’s the one thing ARR added to this release?

Wow, look at old VHS fansubs! I actually don’t think I’ve ever watched an old VHS fansub, so I’m in for a treat, right?

Well, I don’t really care. Let’s get to the show, okay?

Oh ffs, I’m gonna skip the rest of this shit. It goes on for 4 minutes, by the way.

This fucking font doesn’t work, I said!

“peewee”? Really?

If you insist, I believe the word is “teensie”. Except it’s not a word, anyway.

Oh, god. First line of dialogue, and I get a three-liner?

And the second? Really? Is this whole thing gonna be three-liners?

This release stretches words a lot. Here’s one example.

This is where italics should be used, not capitals.

So they have this alt style business so that you can see what’s going on in the rest of the frame. I actually really like it, until…

Don’t do this.

Don’t use excessive punctuation, either. I get that it’s a question. A second question mark isn’t gonna make it any more of a question.

Gee whiz! These subs are so bad!

I wonder is not a question.

This is something these subs did often. This is not how you use an em dash. A comma would have worked fine here.

I don’t get why this had to be in all caps. Even italics wouldn’t be necessary.

Why is it being a HORNED owl going to make any difference?

Verb tense disagreement.

They’ll bring all sorts of diseases if you don’t watch out!

This is its own sentence. Why are you starting it like this?

“Who cares?” is a question.

Again with the em dash where you’re not supposed to use it?

Italics…

I see this a lot in fansubs. Would someone really say this? I’d say, “He really doesn’t have a care in the world!” instead of using the “What a…” phrasing.

If you stretch out words like this, I hate you.

What? I know it’s supposed to be a play on “forget-me-not”, but it sounds stupid.

This is a song. It also doesn’t make any sense.

Isn’t the show over yet?

Stop doing this with sentences!

I don’t think this is the right phrase…

You especially don’t capitalize after an em dash!

And when you stutter, you keep the capital letter.

The ‘so’ is completely unnecessary.

Oh my god, this is great. I wish people rip more of these old VHS cancersubs so I can sit back and laugh at them. I wonder if the Amiga machine even supports italics.

  Well, the font style for the opening was in italics so it certainly supports it – though, whether there was the ability to italicise one word in a line, I’m not sure. I remember a lot of oldsubs (I’m talking professional foreign films here) capping for emphasis, so it could have been an issue. Hm, you could ask Heibi over at Central-Anime – he’s been subbing since the early 90’s so I’m sure he’d remember the compatibility issues if anyone’s that interested in a history lesson~

    VHS fansuns were made by lasering the subtitles onto the tape – in theory, it should support all kinds of forms.

        Thank you, thank you, thank you. Having never seen Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, I was banging my head against the table trying to figure out what “baka” meant.
        …Your point is well taken; although I would argue that “sir” is a slightly more obscure reference than “baka”, what with it being a reference to a single line of optional dialogue in a massive game. But I guess the explanation was unnecessary for you non-simians.

I was the one that requested this review, but I requested the TV series, not the OVA.

Thanks at least for reviewing our fansub. This was one of the first ones we did. Yes, as you pointed out, I used a style entirely out of fashion today, and I suppose it is a little funny to some modern fansub “experts”. It has many grammar mistakes too — but so what. We loved this anime and it took us at least 25 hours of work to make it. Remember, this was entirely with a hand sync’ed genlock, a $1200 piece of equipment that was far out of our price range in 1998. It was like buying a used car, to our budget. Plus software I wrote myself, because no widely available software existed. (SSA was in its infancy – this was subbed and genlocked with SubSonic, which I never released.) This fansub only exists today because we loved it enough to do the work and spend the money. At the time we released it, it was very positively reviewed, and widely collected.
