What a disqualification means:

If the difference between an original script (from Crunchyroll or Funimation or Viz or Daisuki or whatever) and a “fansub” script is not significant, I will disqualify the group from my standard review process and label them fakesubs so they feel shame and want to kill themselves.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t download a disqualified group’s release, since I’m sure you care to some degree about typesetting/karaoke. But you can be certain it’s going to be a lazy effort, with not much difference in the subtitles between the fansub release and the official one. And sometimes groups, with their very few script changes, actually end up making the script worse.

Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to point any such mistakes here.

 

Play along at home:

  1. Rip the scripts from each file with MKVExtract. (I use MKVExtractGUI-2.)
  2. Open them up in Aegisub or something and normalize the scripts so they can be compared. (Remove \N (line breaks), {} (comments), typesetting, and karaoke.)
  3. Open up both scripts in one instance of Notepad++.
  4. Use the Compare plugin (separate download) to compare the scripts.

There. Now you can shut the fuck about your stupid webcompare sites that only look different from my results because you’re a fucking moron.

Sugoier Differences

Original line: “Stop talking like my shithead dad.”

While “shit-head” isn’t wrong per se, “shithead” is the much more commonly accepted spelling. So I’m not quite sure why Commie put in the effort to change this when they hardly touched anything else.

Original line: “Thanks to Clan Lord Nobuhide-sama’s efforts,”

Yes, this is one of the issues with a quick “gotta throw away all the honorifics” edit. Luckily in this case it only fucks with the flow of the sentence, rather than rendering it unintelligible.

“Thanks to the Head of Clan, Lord Nobuhide’s, efforts,” would be an easy fix to let people know that “Head of Clan Lord” isn’t a title.

Original line: “But there still are other warrior lords to reckon with, such as Takeda and Uesugi—”

This is a risky edit because it requires you to assume that Takeda and Uesugi are roaming around, unchecked, on Owari land.

Even assuming Commie totally knows the story of this series perfectly, they should have kept the second comma that Crunchyroll had.

Original lines: “Sure smelled great, anyhow.”//”Was she a beauty?”//”Well, sure.”

Unless Commie was aiming for failure here, I don’t think they hit their mark. I mean, please.

 

 

tl;dr

If you don’t see many problems with the script based on the above lines (they did better than usual), then you can assume the Commie release will be, on the whole, better than the HorribleSubs version. But with so many mistakes in the original HorribleSubs script that were left unfixed in Commie’s version…

…I can’t really say Commie’s providing a valid reason for you to wait for their subs. Cross your fingers that a group that cares is going to sub this. Well, assuming you haven’t already dropped the show.
