I often miss out on OVAs when they come out, so I love that I got the chance to start this one. Super funny. But who tackled it the best?

First thing I have to mention is that there are no karaoke-able songs. The ED is an instrumental. That means no WhyNot rainbows!

Second thing is that Commie went 576p where WhyNot went 480p. From what I, someone who does not encode, understand, DVDs are 480p, so Commie upscaled. Someone wanna tell me what the deal is?

This was well matched.

So like there’s this thing I do where I delete files when I think I’m done with them even if I might not be and I empty the trash immediately following. So now that I look at this, I’m not entirely sure whether this was typeset or in the source. And to make matters worse, I forgot to get a screencap of it in WhyNot’s release.

Awkward phrasing, or did they miss a word?

Their purpose was to save people who had been led astray.

Passive voice chunkiness.

Someone existed whose words even those two feared.

First, I wanna know what the shirts say.

Second, that line is way too formal. It’s a landlady to her clients, not the other way around!

Are you two going to work dressed like that?

This is the translation of a joke. I don’t get it.

Oh, ouch. This line is painful to read. “Themself”? Really?

Well, like anyone in your position, you need to understand yourself.

Overall thoughts: While there weren’t any major English problems, some of the jokes didn’t come off well, and they missed over 3/4 of the typesetting.

This felt pretty important, so I was kind of confused Commie skipped it. But WhyNot did it, and it makes me giggle.

Another shirt typeset! Also am I the only person who thinks the “at home” is redundant? Though he is referring to that Buddha’s hobby is his work, so…

This is long and clunky. I’d recommend what I suggested for Commie, but if you had to go with this wording, I’d scoot “existed” waaay earlier.

A person existed who was capable of uttering words that could instill fear even in them.

But it’s still long and clunky. Just not as clunky.

The way the previous part of the line was written, the “over it” is not necessary, and creates a comma splice. It was something like, “This is the Matsuda Apartments, where…”

That’s not it btw. But you get the idea.

What’s asceticism? Commie just used “reciting sutras” or something.

Strange rumors are floating around about them.

This is how WhyNot treated the joke. The “ping-pong” is literally said, btw. I don’t get it, but the alien thing kind of makes more sense?

You don’t need to go so far as to pay in advance.

This was treated SUPER WELL. Commie used “hand power” instead of “slight of the hand”.

Although, to be honest, guys… I think it’s just “sleight of hand”.

I believe you mean fruit, like you had for the next line.

Although I do understand if you wanted to differentiate a bit.

The “here” is redundant.

This is an appositive issue. We understand what it means because we’re used to it, but it’s still bad form.

When she says, “it’s”, the last noun she spoke to was “eyes”. So does “it’s blinding” refer to her eyes? No!

My eyes! I’m blind! I can’t see anything!

Okay, so it sounds shitty, but at least it’s grammatical, yo~!

Hometown is one word.

Myriad = an infinitely great number.

Unless you’re telling me that Japan is literally an infinite amount of gods, I think you messed up.

Huh?! D-Doesn’t that place house a myriad of gods?!

This is my personal nitpick, but I think this is awkward. Forgive me.

This is another appositive issue. The rice has four seasons?! Wow! I had no idea!

It has delicious rice and four seasons too.

I suppose this is correct, but I think it would sound better inverted.

Hanging up the laundry indoors is getting troublesome.

This is long and clunky and could use some improvements.

There’s nothing else left, since the ventilation fan and sink are already sparkly clean.

While correct, this would sound better as:

I wouldn’t suspect you of it, -> I’m not suspecting you of anything,

Also~ Shirt typesetting!

Having “Buddha” twice in this line is a bit poor to read, even if it is the correct translation. Get rid of one of them.

Her name is Mary. Just because they say “Maria” in Japanese doesn’t mean that’s what it is. I mean, you didn’t write Yesu for Jesus or anything, so what gives?

Overall thoughts: Bunch of typesetting omg. They handled the jokes better, but was lacking a bit in the grammar department.

 

tl;dr: WhyNot was better in terms of being able to enjoy the show, so go with them. Commie’s script may have been more grammatically sound, but the jokes fell flat sometimes and they missed too much typesetting.
