Ending. I… what? Were the OP and ED kfxers different people or something? Unlike the soulless 90s-era karaoke of the OP, the ED is essential perfection. Sensible placement, muted karaoke during the episode portion of the show, and interesting effects when the song hits its stride come full credits time. No complaints.

If you want to blame someone, blame TV Stations saving bandwidth so they can broadcast more channels and MPEG-2 for being particularly prone to this kind of shittiness.

There’s only so much fail I can fix because I get worn down by it. So you’re gonna see a relatively higher concentration of me throwing my hands up into the air with the “if you can’t see what’s wrong here, I don’t have time to explain it to you” excuse attached than you get from most of my other reviews.

Sorry, non-natives. I really can’t afford to write the 40-page essay this script demands — I’ve already spent far too long on this piece of shit.

What a conversation. In case it’s not clear from the context, the first line is said by Kiriko, the next is by Ai, and the third is by Kiriko again.

You do not respond to a question with “Because” when you’re actually ignoring the question and continuing on with something from before that never even necessitated a line beginning with “Because”. Because it’s fucking retarded.

While not technically redundant, it reads that way. Fix the confusion with a bit more detail: “Even for a doctor like me, this will be the first time I’ve ever had a gravekeeper as a patient.”

I… no. That’s not what she’s asking at all. She’s asking if the dead can have designators of health attached to them since they’re, y’know, dead. She’s not asking whether the state of death is unhealthy or not.

Fuck.

They’re dead, not Jewish. Try “selfish”, not “greedy”.

You mean “false pregnancy”.

Let me just give you this whole section so you can let FLag’s brilliance sink in (this post is long enough already without me throwing in 10+ more screenshots):

Diva: I’m not so happy with this.

Diva: Pseudo pregnancy.
Ai: What’s that?
Diva: It’s when the body reacts as if she were pregnant when she actually isn’t.
Pox: It increased quite a bit after God abandoned the world, and women could no longer give birth.

Pox: It just means that a lot of people want to have children.

This script is so fundamentally flawed, it would make a conservative blush.

No, that’s not what “in sight” means. Use “or be looked upon her” or something.

No, it’s not, because Ai doesn’t fucking write to Ulla. And how the fuck would Ulla even read her writing with Ai in the room? What, did Ai learn Braille? Bullshit; she couldn’t even manage learning how to shut the fuck up.

So how do those two lines in the middle relate to the starting and ending lines? What the fuck is going on here?

Odd Man Out

One thing that really raised a flag was how completely different many of FLag’s translations were from Vivid and Hatsuyuki’s releases. And not in a good way.

Have a few examples:

Hatsuyuki: “I’m Diva, Ortus Castle’s physician.”

Vivid: “I’m Diva, the Royal Doctor of Ortus.”

Hatsuyuki: “It’s my job to prevent those problems through neurosurgery, pharmacology and psychology.” {I imagine Hatsuyuki may have borrowed a bit of phrasing here from Vivid.}

Vivid: “Well, my job is to prevent all that, by using neurosurgery, pharmacology, and psychology.”

Hatsuyuki: “Why didn’t you include her title?!”

Vivid: “Why are you calling her by her name all of a sudden?!”

Hatsuyuki: “I am her fellow classmate, while also serving as her instructor.”

Vivid: “I’m both her schoolmate and her teacher.”

Hatsuyuki: “I came to tell you that the city has been placed under martial law.”

Vivid: “I came here to tell you that we are now under martial law.”

Results

Watchability: Unwatchable.

Visual grade: B

Script grade: F

Overall grade: F

This script is so intrinsically fucked, the only way to render this release watchable would be to completely rewrite the script, this time with the aid of humans who can outthink rocks. It’s complete garbage, with script inaccuracies that make it misleading and unrecomendable. There is nothing here a decent human being would find palatable, and even Satan wouldn’t serve it at his table.

Avoid this release like the group avoided learning English.

  He’s not saying “I tried to kill her, but she wouldn’t die.”, but “I was ready to shoot her, because I thought she was undead, but I found out she was still alive, so I didn’t have to kill her.”
  
  You could argue that this line is poorly worded, but that’s pretty much it.

        “That” is very commonly used to refer to people, and there’s some historical precedence for that as well. But in stricter use, it’s considered wrong by most sources.
        
        For dialogue subtitles, personally I would think it’s fine unless it’s for a more learned and careful speaker.

        It’s not wrong. It’s not even bad style. People that (sorry, “who”) correct others for it aren’t just being extra-sensitive about changing language — “that” has been used to refer to living beings for ages (like, since Shakespeare).

Maybe it’s because they don’t realize that wanting to watch a show is one thing, and to try to translate it is a different one entirely?

I bet most of the cases of unqualified fansubbers grabbing a highly anticipated show is plainly because they show interest in the show. They might be thinking “Oh I so wanna fansub a show, and this show is really awesome so I’m gonna do it!”. And that’s not exactly the wrong mentality there, but it’s the wrong approach.

To fansub a show it’s not enough to like the show, you gotta actually want to do it right. The moment you think “Just how hard can it be?” is the moment when you’re doomed to fail. And not because the work is hard or not, but because you’re entering a project half-heartedly, without thinking of how to make it the best you can and without knowing if you have what it takes for “the best you can” to be “good enough to release”.

tl;dr: “Labor of love” isn’t an excuse for “lack of quality”.
