Much like Underwater did in their Mikakunin release, FFF localized “youjo” (a term for a young girl) as “loli”.

I don’t have a problem with it in general (and in fact actually think it was a solid decision), but it’s a bit weird to see a term like “loli” in a release that forgoes honorifics. And don’t tell me you guys didn’t expect to come across “youjo” or “loli” in the scripts when you made that call.

There was no topic shift here, so the use of the “shift gears” idiom is wrong.

    If you google “difference between youjo and loli” in Japanese, you’ll find it’s not terribly clear cut, even to natives. The general consensus is that “loli” is the broader term, while “youjo” is more specifically a girl who’s completely undeveloped–the average age of a “youjo” will be lower than the average age of a “loli”.

    Granted, while “youjo” is technically a common noun, if you see it in anime there’s little doubt the writers were conscious of its connotations in otaku culture. I’ve done youjo -> loli before, since “loli” is a term recognized by the English-speaking anime fandom, while “youjo” is not (but its meaning is encompassed by “loli”).

    Also, from what I’ve heard (from both the typesetter and editor on this release) it’s a CR edit.

    Why? This is why I have to default to HS (CR/Funi) now. Fansubbers think they have to localize everything, but they do it with no consistency or thought. Things that should be localized are localized WRONG, things that shouldn’t be localized because it results in loss of information is localized anyway. “Loli” has a completely different connotation from “youjo”. Hell, it’s not “localization”. The point of localization is to make some parts of the script understandable or relevant for foreigners. I guess it panders to 14 year old “otakus” who think “loli” is a funny/naughty cool word? Either way, those little things are why CR is “killing fansubs”, it’s because fansubbers are STUPID RETARDS. I hope they all die when North Korea nukes the USA.

    • The other available options (leaving it as “youjo”/doing a straight “pre-pubescent girl” translation) wouldn’t fit the flow of the line. That’s why.

      If you have a better option, I’m sure groups would love to use it, because I know TLing it as “loli” did not fit in with FFF’s translation philosophy for the show. It was a compromise, like most translations end up being.

      • I’m pretty sure CR had it as “little girl”. Or if not, that seems good to me. Yes it’s 2 words, but it fits the line okay and doesn’t have the connotation that “loli” has to English speakers (see http://puu.sh/6U64o.png). If anything you’d think “loli” would be the term localized to “little girl” judging from how fansubbers love to remove honorifics and everything Japanese.

          The use of “loli” is really only gonna make sense to waps. If I asked my little bro what he thought “loli” meant, he wouldn’t have a damn idea. So I’d think that would appeal to you more anyway.

            youjo to little girl is fine, even though it’s longer. youjo to loli is the worst of both worlds. it is not literal, and it is shitty localization since it gives the wrong connotation.

            what i don’t like localized is things like… removing honourifics (loss of information as you get no indication of the relationship between characters, unless you have a godlike localization team, which is impossible for fansub groups), and changing terms that have no english equivalent, like youkai.

            to support that argument there are some official DUBS that keep honourifics in. that’s how important they are considered. and of course, youkai just doesn’t have a good translation. most people just say FUCK IT, THEY ARE DEMONS. well no, they aren’t. in phoenix wright ace attorney dual destinies for nintendo 3ds(tm), there is a case about youkai, and what they do in the english translation is give a passing explanation of what is a youkai (i believe they call them japanese demons/mythological creatures), and then proceed to refer to youkai as… youkai.

            those are just 2 things that fansubbers NEVER leave alone (except for damedesuyo with ayakashi in noragami, god bless their souls), even though professional translators often leave them in.

            sometimes TL notes need to come back.

    • And apparently that’s a CR edit, so as usual groups decide to just remove honorifics and overlocalize and call it a day. FANSUBBING EVERYBODY.

      It’s like Hoozuki no Reitetsu where CR did a piss poor job, FFF does an edit, and they didn’t even bother to change anything that actually mattered. Just remove the -sans and the Japanese sounding words, and leave in stupid crap like TLing Tougenkyou (Peach Blossom Spring) as Shangri-la.

      • I dislike people spreading misinformation (I don’t care if you hate our release—that’s your problem—but don’t make up shit that isn’t true), so I’m just going to clear this up:

CR’s base script is the reddish-pink, green are my edits. And this is the episode I edited the least because the dialogue was rather simple, so there wasn’t as much that needed to be done.

        Oh, and FFF’s Hoozuki is an original translation. Please stop pulling things out of your ass.

    • Dunno why you’d default to funi, they never have honorifics from what I’ve seen and then there are the shows where CR don’t use honorifics either, on top of other general localisations. That’s reason why I think all the translation parties here are really helpful for making a decision :)

      • I don’t think he has much idea what he’s talking about. Fansub groups seem a fairly even split between fully localizing (by which he means no honorifics and translating Japanese cultural terms) and more Japanesey ones, maybe tilted a bit more towards the latter. The reviewers here would probably be able to give a closer impression.

        If anything, FFF are usually a +honorifics group, their style is much like UTW. This season has been different – I gather they’ve had new members and these’re working in parellel teams, hence the differences in editing style (compare their subs for this show to their subs for Witch Craft Works, which has not only full honorifics but also “onii-chan”).

        As you say, Funi tends to be without honorifics, sometimes awkwardly localized like “Miss Rukino” in VVV (though weirdly they still had “Shoko-chan” in VVV… well whatever). CR are a mix of styles, probably for similar reasons to FFF (i.e multiple teams running in parellel) unless there’s some kind of arcane marketing rationale behind it.

        In any case, I think blah has a case of Goldilocks syndrome combined with a fetish for subs exactly matching dialogue. So the subs need to be just the right temperature to match how many Japanese terms he knows and doesn’t want localized. Hey, I like Japanese words too, but if I know them then I can hear them, and if I hear them then what the subs say doesn’t matter.
