OP. “Shiro kuno” is supposed to be shirokuro (black and white), a Japanese translation for “monochrome.” Otherwise it’s fine.

Like I said in the FUNi review, she’s saying bakushou shiteiru in which means “exploding with laughter,” but in this case she’s saying her trembling knees are shaking with laughter. FUNi had it completely right with their “cracking up” line, but S-T-D, in their infinite wisdom, decided to orwell the first part of this joke.

Of course, absent a TLC check, they didn’t have very good material from which to adapt the joke in the first place, either from FUNi or the scanlations.

I say it was an overall good release, and had it not been a simulcast edit it would have deservedly garnered a high grade. But they added an error where one needn’t be, so they regrettably didn’t pass.

    • Why not just do a sanity check with a color check tool then? There are dedicated utilities that’ll simply display anywhere on the screen, or of course you could snap it and bring it into Photoshop/Gimp or whatever program you prefer. That’ll put numbers and a spectrum to it for you even if you can’t see it yourself (in this case the top is brown while the bottom is black, looks like you used brown for both so the top matches but the bottom doesn’t).

      • Can you imagine doing that for every sign you ever had to typeset? lol clearly I screwed up on this one but shades are very hard for me. So when there is no distinct difference to my eyes for two signs on the same screen, I don’t bother to whip out the aegisub color picker again. Doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have.

    • I suppose color blind affects different people in different ways. But “half-color” blind and can’t tell black hehehehe no

        • You can’t defend this with “we all make mistakes” when the person in question admits they knew they were doing it wrong and didn’t bother fixing it while implying that they’ll do the same thing in the future with no regrets.

          It’s not the end of the world if you try to fix your mistakes, either, and you don’t even need to make excuses. I promise.

  2. also, i’m interested how you would fit in both “black and white” and monochrome into the same line in the OP lyrically.

    • Well, obviously I don’t follow Soul Eater, but I’ll need to see more proof that they have to literally match their breathing. Otherwise it’s just an odd transliteration of a common Japanese phrase.

      • Me either, to be honest. We asked some people who had seen it and they said match breathing. Wiki just confirmed it for us. Fellow Crymore readers who watched Soul Eater, feel free to chime in.

        • Japanese relies too much on context so souls could be assumed here with breathing as a euphemism. The “breath of life” crap meant soul at one point.

          If we acknowledge each other’s wills and remain in sync,

          I would choose the second one; feels better, hits on the main point; compatible, not similar, souls are a major theme in SE.

          The first sounds odd and misses the point, sounds too “physical” (in the when I jump you jump sense) and she was obviously just standing there letting him spin around her hand when what she really did was trust him to follow her lead.

          TL;DR reasoning…
          Example: Two people who act opposite can compensate for the other’s failings bringing a sync if you consider the “wills” part. 1 wills to defend while the other/others will to fight and they don’t go against each other’s wills. This happened in the original Soul Eater and they had to play this matching souls thing to get working together again. No amount of heavy breathing was going to make that sync, it was all about making their souls connect to be able to fight and to go up to the next level of attack. Now that no one read all that, this is the reason I would have the word “souls” in there.

      • More like an early manga guesstalation that stuck. It should still be fixed but then there will be people who think they are purists just for propagating a mistake (like adding it to a wiki) that it is blasphemy to change it now.

        As for my chime in, I say make it right. A repeated mis-translation is still a mis-translation. And it sounds weird when they are obviously not just breathing the same, what I am seeing and what I am reading don’t match.

      • I fansubbed the first 16 episodes of the original soul eater anime, and watched the rest. I do think they had to be in sync or something, but you’d have to ask bigger soul eater fans to be get a better confirmation.
