Normally, I’d offer webms to show you how the karaoke looks in motion. But to prevent your internet connection from cutting itself like a tumblrina, I’m gonna save you the headache and tell ya it looks exactly like it does in the screenshots.

I believe the karaoke is improved in later episodes, but that doesn’t matter much for an episode 02 review.

Ignoring the bad English, the big problem here is the placement/sizing. Fonts often collide with their boundaries, drawing viewers away from the show and toward how fucking awkwardly stretched everything is. There’s a reason why 0-point margins are universally reviled.

Script Review

Main Script.

Repetitious, unnecessary dialogue plagues the script almost as much as the script plagues the script.

I very rarely take issue with incomplete sentences in scripts, simply because they come up so often in natural conversation. Here, however, it’s nothing but uncanny valley.

Doesn’t bode well for a release when the editor couldn’t pass a written Turing test.

No he hadn’t.

Wait a minute… That Engrishy dialogue seems familiar. Kojima, is that you?

Dammit Kojima, this kind of Dark_Sage-targeted viral marketing is unwarranted and unnecessary — you should’ve known I had MGSV pre-ordered as soon as you introduced Quiet. <3

Offically, this acronyms to SWPRE, not SWNPR as DDY has it in the rest of the release.

Apparently there was a tug-of-war between the editor and the TLC as to what naming order to use, and the viewer lost.

Also, Kaito is not the “homeroom teacher of Kirishina Academy”. Has the sign TL ever even stepped inside a school?

It’s its.

The constant spelling mistakes are a bigger cry for help than trying to overdose on fucking Allegra. I hope the editor gets the ESL classes he so desperately needs.

Alternatively, begna could start teaching his staff how to use Aegisub. It ain’t hard.

It’s like someone put MLK’s speech through Google Translate a couple times and came back with this. Good joke, sure, but let’s keep the memes to a minimum.

Please learn what the words you’re using mean. These aren’t even hard ones.

More spelling mistakes. What a fucking surprise. And by that, I mean I’m not surprised at all. Zing!

A lot of the dialogue you’ll encounter in this release appears to have been written in silos. Here, the lines are spoken back to back.

Just drop the “However” and this would read fine.

I realize this is gonna sound weird coming from the kind of guy who gets hype at Chinese restaurants “because the menus are practically made of anime symbols”, but take it down a fucking notch, holy shit. You guys are the reason I dread interacting with people at anime cons.

More instantaneous than instantaneous? DDY has quite the unique perspective on reality in this release.

Remember how I pointed out that learning how to use the spellcheck function would be a good life skill for the editor to learn? Well, I forgot to mention that Aegisub also automatically spellchecks for you.

The editor literally had to look at this line (and all the other lines), think to himself “no, it’s the world that’s wrong”, and fucking commit his failure to internet permanence. Great job, tomoda, you piece of shit. I hope you choke to death on alphabet soup.

Watchability: Watchable, but why bother?

Visual grade: C-

Script grade: D-

Overall grade: D

Don’t pull a me and assume DDY is the release to go with for Classroom Crisis. Obviously, my faith was entirely misplaced (and this is a good argument for why you shouldn’t judge a release based on brand name alone).

I have a feeling FFF will be your go-to for Classroom Crisis, but you shouldn’t feel too enthused about settling for them.

At this point, you’re probably better off just dropping the show entirely. Viva Fansubbing 2015.

Is this better than aniplex? Been watching their releases for a while now and the mistakes seems passable, fff is slo but didn’t look into hs.

To be fair, occasionally it actually is the world that’s wrong. And the Aegisub spellchecker isn’t perfect. I don’t think it recognizes “spellcheck” as a word, for example.

I should point out that pretty much all of the fonts except the dialogue font are somehow displaying incorrectly for you. A test on a clean VM with CCCP installed displays them correctly so I’m not sure what you did to mess them up.

Additionally, the show’s signs itself are inconsistent on SWNPR. There are 3 different variations of it in signs in the one episode itself.

    As I explained to D_S, this was a bad episode for us. The editor was on vacation and we were barely able to contact him among other difficulties. Episode 3+ are a much better representation of our releases as a whole.
    
    We definitely did drop the ball this episode but I will blame some of it on the actual japanese script being repetitious and wordy as hell.

        That’s probably why it didn’t work. Typically you’re supposed to label all fonts as x-truetype for it to apply. Any .otf font is not being read because of the labeling.
        It is most likely working for you because the fonts are installed already on your computer, so matroska can pull it from that data.

      The font used here is Oceania (*not* bold) and the font file attached is Oceania-Light.otf.

    Well English is not my first language. Only did it a couple years at school and most of it comes from the internet and you can guess it, fanbsubs. Because of that i tend to overlook things some people would tear their hair for out :p
    
    But since you asked: Mostly the “engrish” and the spelling ones.
    I did however notice that even tough i didn’t actually saw the spelling mistakes, it seems that when i type the same sentences i auto correct it.
    So it is more of a case of reading over it then anything else. That doesn’t take the grammar in account tough if there were mistakes on that subject as well.

      I don’t know how much I can help you with the Engrish if you’re not even seeing the spelling mistakes. For that, you’re generally gonna want to understand how people speak, which entails watching English media or even reading English literature.

        The problem is that it’s straight Engrish — nobody would phrase a line like that. And there isn’t a way I can explain that to you without getting into a dry-ass discussion on English that I have no interest in starting.
        
        There’s tons of things you can do with the line, so there’s no one response I can give as far as a fix. With sentences like that, the editor basically has a blank check.
        
        “You were entirely out of line.” or something similar would suffice since he’s scolding the girl, basically saying he had everything completely under control and that there was no need to mount a rescue mission.

        It’s mainly that I don’t have an easy explanation for you that doesn’t sound like I’m making shit up. Like, I know it’s :wrong:, any other native speaker would also say it’s :wrong:, but there’s not exactly a textbook rule I have for pointing out why. It’s like how you can (presumably) easily pick up on if someone is speaking your native language incorrectly, even if they’re only slightly off.

        Okay, to be honest, the line did start sounding weird to me after saying it out loud a couple of times, but I still can’t put my finger on what’s exactly wrong about it. By the way, is FFF’s error that they put “including” and “combined” in the same sentence, or that they didn’t put anything after “160,000”?

        Well, I would have included it as a warning just for the general redundancy in the verbiage, but the most glaring issue is that they should have used “employ”, which is a verb, rather than “employee”, which is a noun.

        I don’t think it’s textbook wrong, it just doesn’t sound natural. That sentence wouldn’t ever come out of an English natives mouth.
        
        I didn’t even look at the context so I can’t be sure if I’ve got the meaning of the sentence right, but something like “You didn’t need to worry, I had everything under control.” sounds more real to me.

        Native speaker here, I don’t think there’s that much wrong with that line other than the “worries” part. If the students weren’t at all worried about that guy getting kidnapped, then that’d be bad, so worrying would be fine. However, if the line had been “Your actions were completely unwarranted” I would not have a problem with that and I don’t know why D_S hates it so much. It doesn’t seem awkward to me at all, especially for companyspeak like this guy would tend to talk in.
