Crunchyroll has consistently demonstrated that they’re fine with using multiple colors in their subs (via typesetting), so I’m not sure why they haven’t applied that same logic to differentiating between multiple speakers. Anime dialogue can get confusing when you get a couple characters talking, so this is the kinda situation that definitely needs addressing.

Main Script.

The way this is phrased makes it seem like they were… formed from some other lifeform? Fucking weird is what it is. Pretty sure all the line’s supposed to get across is “You’re HackaDolls, so stop being lazy sacks of shit and do something with your bit-forsaken lives.”

I can understand the desire to throw up in the sentence, but it’s a pretty bad look no matter how tactfully done.

Crunchyroll got this line right, just wanted to address that it really is ado, and not adieu.

I get the feeling “bandwagoner” is some doujin scene term that I just haven’t encountered yet, cuz this line doesn’t make much sense otherwise. If it isn’t (my google results have been inconclusive), then yeah, this needs to be rephrased.

 

To change tack, the characterization and phrasing is pretty good here. Slang is used tactfully and in a manner that matches the Japanese dialogue…

…the subtitles match the pacing…

…and CR gives the harshest burns…

I’ll admit none of these are particularly outstanding, and probably wouldn’t be worthy of pointing out in a lengthier show, but they do add up to a pretty good release in this instance.

 

 

 

Results

Unlike the poor effort by Sentai, this is a solid example of where simulcasts should be hitting. You probably don’t even need to bother with looking for an alternate option for the show, if one even appears.

As far as HackaDoll itself goes… the show is dumb fun. Put this on your watch list if you’re fine with avoiding the crippling depression of reality for 8 minutes an episode.

Plus, any series that flashes back by going 4:3 shoujo deserves some attention. Give it a chance if you’re bored, but don’t expect it to be anything higher than a 7/10.

Overall grade: Pass, for both the subs and the show.
