Good thing half the punchlines in the show weren’t displayed in the signs, or this’d be inexcusable.

 

 

Timing.

There’s a reason why timer is the default intro position for fansubbing — it only takes about half the sentience of a rock to do properly.

Apparently that was asking too much of an official release.

 

Worse than missing cues, the shoddy — and hardsubbed — timing actively ruins jokes by delivering the (albeit shitty) punchlines ahead of schedule.

May want to start learning Japanese, cuz this ain’t gonna be the last official release to make a compelling case for just watching the show without subs.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was contracted out to the same sweatshop that Funimation outsources to.

 

 

 

Script Review

Scripwriting vs Translating.

There’s a line between scriptwriting and translating that Monster Strike is often on the wrong side of. It’s not as bad as memesubs, but the experience can be pretty jarring.

I’d imagine they wrote this in hopes of a dub, judging by such otherwise nonsensical choices as turning an Engrish line like “The Monster Colosseum” into this:

 

 

Main Script.

Awkward and stilted, dialogue can sometimes seem like it was translated as a monologue.

While you may not notice it if you go autopilot through the series (as I would expect most people would), if ya take some time to process what you’re reading, you’ll notice the laziness.

As opposed to what? Pussy?

While she may be a muff diver, that’s not an assumption about someone a middle schooler can usually make quite right off the bat. Truncate this to “So you like swimming?”

This is the only technical mistake that I felt was worth mentioning.

Protip time:

If you can replace the family member’s relation with their name, then you should capitalize it.

For example, “Hey, Mom.” and “Hey, Karen.”

If replacing the name makes the line sound stupid, then you just keep it lowercase.

For example, “My mom is the best mom in the world.” vs. “My Karen is the best Karen in the world.” (The second one sounds weird.)

 

 

 

Results

Overall grade: Pass.

While the timing’s shit and the signs aren’t translated, the script is technically passable. Not like you have any other options if you want to watch this blatantly mediocre f2p ad, though.

Makes me wonder why the fuck I even started watching this in the first place.
