Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_00.20_[2016.08.28_21.06.23]

CR butchered Julius’s dialogue in almost every goddamn line. July speaks with aristocratic airs, an essential part of his character, which any hearing individual can tell because his VA isn’t as shit as Subaru’s.

However, CR’s dialogue hardly ever reflects this, likely because nobody working on the script knows how to speak formally. …Which I guess explains why their life’s greatest accomplishment was likely becoming an expendable contractor for a niche streaming service.

“But the man you see before you is not this ‘Julius.'”

This means nothing. A handwritten letter written by whom? For whom? What are its contents?

A show of Re:Zero’s quality does not have fucking throwaway content, so stop failing to advance the story with your shit writing. The editor for this show is about as unsalvageable as Flight MH370. #TimelyReference

Reading scripts like this, I wouldn’t be surprised if my ballsack decided to sterilize itself out of shame for the human race.

Knights in Re:Zero aren’t useless bystanders, they’re go-getting, prideful motherfuckers. Killing the White Whale was not a pipe dream of theirs — “wish” is shit word choice.

If you prefer conservative edits, “desire” would get the point across, but I’d be inclined toward calling it a “goal”.

Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.12_[2016.08.28_14.48.51] Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.16_[2016.08.28_14.48.58]

Godfuck, the point of this scene is Subaru’s matured enough to apologize for his shit behavior, but that he’s still the vindictive, psychopathic asshole that only a monster could hesitate to fall in love with. Err, or just that he’s still not a fan of Julia. Either way, the key word in both sentences there is fucking “still”.

Phrased as seen on screen, Subaru is saying it like this is a new development. Please, Crunchyroll. English is not supposed to be this hard.

Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.45_[2016.08.28_14.51.15]

This is the most uninspiring line of combat-related dialogue I’ve seen since literally everything in My Hero Academia.

She’s politely agreeing to move the conversation on here, not explicitly. “Right” is the better choice for her response.

No, they’re not the same word, ESL-tachi; even synonyms carry different contexts.

Alternatively, you could end her line with ellipses. And no, just because you’re able to infer line connotation in spite of poor writing does not excuse the writing itself.

Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_09.46_[2016.08.28_22.43.23] Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_09.48_[2016.08.28_22.43.28]

It’s an “unseen hand,” right? -> It’s only an “unseen hand,” right?

Adjectives are useful. Adjectives are quite useful.

Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_11.38_[2016.08.28_15.00.04]

This sounds like he’s going to ask him for an unreasonable favor, rather than him apologizing for asking the silver fox to go all Robert Ford on best boy.

Let’s just take some time out of this review to appreciate how fucking good Re:Zero is. I mean, Jesus Christ, it has no fucking right to be, but it is.

Re Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - 22 [720p].mkv_snapshot_14.15_[2016.08.28_22.51.37]

no threat -> no real threat

Again, adjectives. Don’t underestimate this shit. As-is, the line contradicts itself.

I mean… no.

Maybe if this was a line where Purple Julius went all “hey what a whacky thing you just said, I am going to act confused so we can establish that this totally, definitely isn’t IRL” like some out-of-place callback to the first arc, then yeah, this would make sense.

Since it’s not, pretty much any other flippant response that doesn’t have home-universe connotations would fit better.

Overall grade: Pass.

Re:Zero is an epic in the truest sense. It is likely that this series will remain the greatest anime of all time until the stars die out, the universe retracts into itself, and Funimation hires someone of value. This show deserves a script that reflects the quality of Subaru-senpai’s perfection. Crunchyroll does not provide that script.

DameDesuYo vs. Crunchyroll

While Crunchyroll’s version is definitely watchable (it’s what I watch first), you’d be cutting off your dick (or clit) to spite your crotch if you archived theirs. While I doubt I’ll care enough to give DDY’s subs a review, I can tell you with full confidence that their release is better and far more deserving of your hard drive space.

    • Hold up, what? The only valid complaint anyone could have about the show is the lack of quality waifus, and with episode 22 you can at least see they’re trying to change that. Once that fix goes in, the show will be objectively without flaws.

    • Much like Ergo Proxy, Re:Zero is very methodical with its approach to the human condition. If it appears slow, that is only because life itself appears slow.

      • Maybe, but there are big differences between some parts of the show. For an instance, first arc ends quickly, but second arc is hella slow and totally unacceptable. Well, I’m falling asleep with so many loops.

        • Wouldn’t say it’s slow if you focus on Subaru’s character development. (God I hate the term character development.)

If ya can’t stand Subaru, though? Yeah, I could see it being Endless 8-tier for some people.

  1. I just don’t understand why DDY decided to butcher names, like Beako -> Becky or Barusu -> Balse. It feels so out of place; even if the person doesn’t get the Laputa reference, at least they can see that it is a play on Subaru.

Are they continuing with that style? I haven’t seen their later releases, so I’m not sure if they changed other character names.

    • I am not a fan of when fansubbers change names, especially now that it’s pretty clear fansub interpretations will never even become fancanon. While I think DDY’s editing outweighs any such concerns about the character names, it’s totally understandable if that’s a deal breaker for you.

Nope. It’s often localized as that (r=>l). Go and buy some LNs, you fucking pirate. Btw, game localizations are full of interpretations and such. I don’t understand why streaming sites don’t do it. Hell, they’ve changed “Divinity” to “Armatization”. And not a single fuck was given.

    • So… like FMA Brotherhood? They sure do have a lot in common other than the high rating.

On a more serious note, the show panders heavily to as many otaku tastes as it can, all the while maintaining a tight plot, having a relatively fresh protagonist who isn’t a shounen cardboard cutout, and generally being not-offensively-stupid about its blunders. It maintains a good balance between deconstruction and cynicism, and its portraying of human emotions and motivations for any given scene is mostly genuine and spot-on for the characters it has established. If the worst thing you can say about a deliberately low-common-denominator series is “it’s slow and some characters aren’t that great”, that alone should explain the high rating.
