Figure I’ll put sub recommendations in too. Due to posting time/apathy/space constraints, don’t expect too much on that end.
The Rankings – Part 1/1
Bestiality, mpreg, big simping, NTR… Japan sure is reading the 2020 vibe well.
In this episode:
Dokyuu Hentai HxEros – Bad
Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Many Words – Okay
Lapis Re:LiGHTs – Bad
Deca-Dence – Okay
The God of High School – Okay
Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! – Good
Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan – Good
Kanojo, Okarishimasu – Bad
Monster Musume no Oishasan – Meh
Gibiate – Meh
Koi to Producer: EVOL×LOVE – Meh
Shorts – Skippable on Average
Note that I’ve watched at least the first episode of these, and read a good portion of the associated manga, if there is one. Light novels suck, so don’t expect me to waste my time on those.
For the sub recommendations, I wanna reiterate that I did not put in the time here I normally would. I went to nyaa.si, downloaded everything that wasn’t labeled a remake, and then did quick comparisons off whatever stupid shit caught my eye in the first release I watched. Do note, however, that my opinion on the subject is still better than literally everyone else’s.
Dokyuu Hentai HxEros – Bad
(Super HxEros)
tl;dr: Ugly bug aliens have come to earth to steal sex energy and they must be fought off with… sex energy. Before you ask, no, this is not even remotely close to Kyochuu Rettou.
Basically the same as the above, but you trade off (somehow) worse typesetting for more ass and visual detail, so I’d go with them.
TS:
Ass:
Censored:
Uncensored:
The whole point of the series is the ecchi, but even then it can’t commit. Scenes like this are intended to be provocative, but they’re practically injecting apathy into my dickveins with this shit:
Sadly, the author can make hot scenes. Here’s an example from his cannibal one-shot:
The adaptation provides more spice than the manga, primarily in the form of yo-yo boobs, but titillation levels remain low overall. As far as ecchi goes, I deserve better.
Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Many Words – Okay
(The Misfit of Demon King Academy)
tl;dr: Demon lord sacrifices himself in the name of peace, reincarnates 2,000 years later, and realizes the world has gotten a bit lame in his absence. The only way to rectify it? Beating the shit out of high schoolers.
Director 1: Oonuma Shin (He’s got some hits with Baka to Test, Kokoro Connect, and ef… but he’s also done a fuckton of shitty romcoms and slice-of-life series, so…)
Director 2: Tamura Masafumi (Kenja no Mago and a few others, but I think he’s just here to absorb Oonuma’s essence)
Animation Production:Silver Link. (Silver Link does a lot.)
This’d be your standard, shitty MC-wins-everything-cuz-why-not shounen-of-the-month, except:
A. The main character is SMUG, OP, and hot af
&
B. He has two doofus “parents” who are fan-fucking-tastic
I stand by the manga, but the pacing and characterization in the anime is… off from what I expected. Perhaps this is a faithful adaptation of the LN (who the fuck reads LNs though), but if that’s the case, then the source is mediocre too. For example, while the manga sets up MC-kun as being an immensely powerful demon lord, he also has a sense of humor and goes out of his way to (subtly) help out those he deems worthy. The anime is basically just “what if a pet rock could walk and also cast fireball?”
I’ll watch the show to completion, but that’s only because I know there’s something of value beneath the poorly animated veneer. If this is your first exposure to the series, you’ll have a good enough time if you were somehow able to tolerate Mahouka or Log Horizon. But for the rest of you, feel free to skip, or catch the KireiCake scanlation. It’s got top memes.
Lapis Re:LiGHTs – Bad
tl;dr: Forgoing some wacky gimmick like good characterization or compelling plot, we get a bunch of ~magical idols~ singing ~magical songs~. After you watch the series, I have no doubt you’ll understand why I’ve been clearing my local home depot out of as much propane and bags of weedkiller I can find.
[HorribleSubs] – Funimation-translated. There’s a case to be made for localized subs, but that’s really not the case here, plus it’s inconsistently done. Funi’s never hired top talent either, and it shows through:
[Muse] – Muse Asia-translated; very stilted and awkward. Only an irredeemable weeb could tolerate these. At least the songs are translated (kind of important for a show about fucking idols).
[TouyaSubs] – Touya-translated
Fun facts about the TL, “Touya Kami”, who’s also the only member of this group:
He’s never actually studied Japanese: “I’m not even an N5”
Kid has a 2.6 GPA in fucking business of all majors
Has a reddit account
Is extremely pissed that Vtube translators are more popular than him
This whole fucking thing: “Unlike most people’s online accounts, where there’s almost no difference between the person and the persona, Touya and I live very different lives. I have legitimately forgotten my own name more than once, because of Touya.”
Still plans to sub the BDs lmao
So…?
None of the releases are good. Luckily, the show isn’t either. So don’t watch it.
Forget awful idols for a second; in my research for this post, I learned a lot about Miru Tights. Namely, this:
Quarantine’s giving me something illegal to fap to every day~
Deca-Dence – Okay
tl;dr: Post-apocalyptic world. Tons of monsters. And a bunch of humans live in a fortress that is seemingly humanity’s last hope against the threat.
Spoiler for
Director: Tachikawa Yuzuru (Death Parade & Mob Psycho 100. Maybe he’ll make something good this time.)
[Dunce] – Unedited Funimation, but with typesetting. I need to fuck around with a few settings on my player because this is not how it’s supposed to look and I don’t know why it’s taking screenshots like this (new comp with fresh installs of everything). Anyway, I’m lazy and don’t really see the need for this release since the officialsubs are otherwise the same and release quicker. But it is better if that’s your primary concern.
Genki MC wants to fight threats against humanity even though she faces adversity. But ~plot twist~ there’s more to the world than lets on!
After the second episode, I’m still as ambivalent about the thing as I was going through episode 1. I mean, it hasn’t done anything yet.
If I had to guess, this isn’t gonna be worth the effort to watch, but I’m willing to give it another couple episodes to prove itself.
The God of High School – Okay
tl;dr: A whole bunch of high school students fight in a tournament. But there’s a twist:
That’s right. 0 stakes, with a straight face. Korea, plz.
I like how Crunchyroll funded a significant portion of this adaptation, yet couldn’t even negotiate the licensing rights to translate the fucking OP and ED
[Glue] – Crunchyroll-base. TS, kara, very minimal editing.
This comes out quickly enough that it’s worth the minor upgrade over HorribleSubs
There has never been a good manwha. It’s as easy and cheap as American cartoons, but has all the trappings of shit storytellers. The perpetually colonized Koreans.
<Seriously, Korea, you get kudos for the kimchi, but not a whole lot else. No wonder Japan gave you up to us so easily.>
Every character has “levels” and “HP”. It’s like the author watched Dragon Ball Z and the only thing he got out of it was that power scanners are cool. But god, every other shounen just does it so much better. Here you get cringe shit like “oh no, I only have 8 HP left, I can only survive one more punch” and “wow! leveling up during battle how is that even possible?!”
Gets even worse. Everyone ends up acquiring magic powers and the idea of interesting martial arts fights goes by the wayside as you get stupid counter-wars (still, with no consequences) like “oh, I have a shield that can’t be broken!” “aha, fool! I have a sword that can break any shield!” “yeah? well, I have a whale that can eat you!” “ohohoho, guess you didn’t realize my dragon can eat your whale first!”
It’s basically Yu-Gi-Oh, but without the TV-PG tiddies.
I won’t blame anyone for being sucked in by the anime’s shiny colors. But keep in mind that no matter how you pretty you paint a sewer, it’s still 90% shit.
Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! – Good
(Uzaki-chan Wants to Play! )
tl;dr: Attractive people flirt with each other. One of them has bazookas.
Direction: Miura Kazuya (He’s only done Dramatical Murder and Hataage! Kemono Michi, which sucked)
Animation Production:ENGI (Hataage! Kemono Michi… so yeah, this’ll be their second series)
Sub Options (as of posting time):
[HorribleSubs] – Funimation-translated.
[Mad le Zisell] – Pretty much unedited Funi subs.
You ask good questions, Mad! If the source subs really are as bad as you say, then why did you:
Leave them pretty much untouched?
Make the lines you touched objectively worse? (Protip: interruptions are best handled by em-dashes; not ellipses)
Judging from the manga alone, I’d be out on this show. But while it keeps up with the skits, wherein Uzaki bullies MC-kun to impotence, the show has enough cute flashbacks (not presented in the manga, at least at this pacing) so you don’t feel like you’re rooting for a bully.
It’s just enough to ignore the broken bones.
Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan – Fan-fucking-tastic. My man-serpent spews rainbows in honor of this show and also because internal dick damage to the blood vessels can result in multiple ejaculate colorations.
(Petey G. and the Wife(s)-to-Be)
tl;dr: Could a series about a guy constantly cheating on his fiancee get any more heartwarming?
Petey G. is the new champ of the world, and every female in it, regardless of their species, wants his aryan manseed so their offspring will be strong or something. (r/hapas/ on suicide watch.)
But Pete’s engaged to the beautiful human female Luvelia-senpai-san. Will he fall victim to the feminine wiles of– oh, he does? Immediately? And continues his infidelitous rampage throughout the entire series, essentially making that the only plot point? Well that’s not wholesome at all!
I was originally pretty out on the concept, but it becomes easier to deal with when you realize this is basically an H-RPG, where the main character is nothing but an ever-juiced male hucow (if there’s a term for this, please don’t tell me).
Blackmailed, manipulated, raped… our dude is nothing but used by everyone around him except the one person he truly loves, and suffers crushing guilt every time he fails her expectations. Which is great, cuz fuck him for getting to have sex with all the hotties the series has to offer. I am insanely jealous.
Speaking of, here’s a definitive rankings list (I’d post pics but when they display their charm points is kinda the highlight of every arc, so I’ll just leave this for everyone else who’s caught up):
Orc Girl
Ogre Onee-san
Ogre Onee-chan
Gobuko
Mithril
Luvelia
The Elf
As far as the anime adaptation goes… I’ll probably set it at around an 8, whereas I have the manga at about a 10. The uncensored ogre boobs make up for any pacing issues inherent in a 12-minutes-per-episode series.
Kanojo, Okarishimasu – Meh
(Rent-a-Girlfriend)
tl;dr: A 21-year-old virgin pays a girl to pretend to date him, and on his second “date” has a spazz-out where vomits his incel manifesto about how no girl will every truly date him because femoids never go for nice guys, and… the anime makes it work out for him.
I’d post screenshots but something’s fucky on my end and I really don’t want to delay this post further till when I sober up in the morning. I am gonna say I give the nod to GHS, but the real winning play is to just not watch the show.
Hot girl gets with loser is a common trope in romcoms, but this shit’s a bit beyond the pale.
Even Hen Zemi had better character interactions, and that shit was kinda…
Yeah, dropped. Completely.
Monster Musume no Oishasan – Meh
(Monster Girl Doctor)
tl;dr: Human doctor runs a clinic where he fixes up monster girls.
Dude handled Love Hina, Zero no Tsukaima, and Hayate, but since then there’s been nothing to write home about*. Time to retire, old man.
*Okay, I fucking loved Twin Angel Break & Last Period, but that’s more of a personal problem than anything.
Animation: Arvo Animation (BokuBen, some OVA, and… that’s it)
Sub Options (as of posting time):
[HorribleSubs] – Crunchyroll-translated.
No other options. 2020 is EZ for the Sage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeOOfDq_-GI
Before the trailer gets your hopes up, be warned that the series consists of dialogue and plot too.
It’s been 25 years since Evangelion invented anime, and now there’s enough ecchi out there that you could invariably choose something better from your backlog. Wait for some degenerate to make webm cuts of the fappable shit and pretend this never existed.
The Monsters of Covid Island – Meh
tl;dr: A samurai and a ninja are transported to current-day Japan, where most of humanity has been transformed into bad CGI. Along with an American girl wielding a stun gun, they are humanity’s last hope in a season where every other fucking anime has been canceled.
Spoiler for
Direction: Komino Masahiko (He hasn’t directed anything else yet, but he did do the character design for the worst JoJo’s arc.)
Gibiate’s whole draw was that it had a bunch of Japanese “visionaries” working on it, most notably Yoshitaka Amano of Final Fantasy fame. Much like Chaos Dragon, this focus on names over talent has resulted in a disjointed, mediocre mess, wherein the budget has clearly been spent on whatever the Japanese equivalent of fancy sushi is.
In case you weren’t picking up the vibe I was putting down, I am saying we need to nationalize anime so future generations will never have to be subjected to shit like this:
Koi to Producer: EVOL×LOVE – Meh
(Mr. Love: Queen’s Choice)
tl;dr: Sub-par fujobait based on a Chinese mobile game.
Spoiler for
Manga: Who cares
Direction: Who cares
Animation Production: Who cares
Sub Options (as of posting time):
[HorribleSubs] – Crunchyroll-translated
I dunno, it sucks. I’m nearly done with the post anyway. Let’s move on.
The Shorts – Varies
Ninja Collection – Bad
Chou Futsuu Toshi Kashiwa Densetsu R – Okay
Kyojinzoku no Hanayome – Meh
Get Up! Get Live! #Geragera – Bad
tl;dr
Awful fucking season on the whole, but hey, at least you’ve got me, and I never give up on love. <3

Regarding Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha, how is the MC “hot AF” when he looks similar to so many other protagonists out there?
Talking about sequels has little value other than padding space. Either you watched the previous season(s) and know whether you’re in for another, or you didn’t and you’d skip it anyway.
Also, I’m kind of a completionist and would want to watch the previous seasons in order to talk about every sequel of the season. In this case, Summer 2020 has Enen no Shouboutai, No Guns Life, and Muhyo to Rouji, which I had no interest in spending my time to get caught up on. Enen, in particular, is miserable in every sense of the word.
I mean, it’s them or HorribleSubs, and DDY is basically the only group left in the scene. Would be terribly surprised if it’s not the release to watch.
I’m trying to muster the energy to finish the “director’s cut” so I can pop into S2 all fresh ‘n shit, but with Legend of the Galactic Heroes staring me down, I think it’s gonna be a bit before I start in.
I know Funimation is everyone’s favorite punching bag, but even they aren’t responsible for Aniplex’s awful subs. Might mean less fun for you, but Super HxEros and Misfit are unfortunately Aniplex’s current victims

I guess he’s cute but not as cute you, Dark_Sage.

Thank you for supplying my opinions on this season.
To be fair he explains what what he meant by ‘worst subs’ down in the comments.
His inability to make that clear might be the reason he left ’em untouched.
Should’ve dredged the comments, I see. Thanks for the context.
Terrible season but pretty good for shit that was supposed to air during the olympics.
2/10 – at least anime didn’t end
Dark_Sage, why didn’t you comment on Re:zero season 2, which is clearly the best show of the summer season?

No sequels, no memes.
Actually, you must be a sad man to not put this in here:

I saw the thumbnail and was expecting you to comment on it.
What about it is miserable?
So fucking boring. Firefighters suck and fire powers suck. Just give me Soul Eater remastered so I can be happy for once.
How is DameDesuYo’s ReZero?
I mean, it’s them or HorribleSubs, and DDY is basically the only group left in the scene. Would be terribly surprised if it’s not the release to watch.

Hah. That Uzaki-chan image surprised me.
On another note, I skimmed your 2015 state of fansubbing article and this one. I like your attitude!
GJM, LostYears and Kaleido are still active. Along with all the groups you’ve never heard of who only do really obscure shows.
LostYears needs to work on its branding cuz I wasn’t aware they even had staff beyond whoever sticks English audio onto other releases.
Yeah, so far they’ve only done it for a few shows though and mainly with the help of Kaleido staff.
I know Funimation is everyone’s favorite punching bag, but even they aren’t responsible for Aniplex’s awful subs. Might mean less fun for you, but Super HxEros and Misfit are unfortunately Aniplex’s current victims
Whoops, thanks for the correction! Updated.
