v. Winter 2014
Archive: v. Fall 2013
Consider this just a way for me track my own thoughts in a regular fashion. I usually do this in a .txt .xls, but figured I may as well put it on Crymore and share it with the few of you that are interested.
Detailed “analysis” will be provided in weekly status updates on Crymore proper. But feel free to chat it up in this thread~
Current Show Ratings – v1.011
- I’m sure you can figure out how this generally works on your own.
- Scores are not based on the episode, but my overall impression of the series by that point.
- If applicable, I will link the scores to the weekly anime update in which I talk about those episodes. Don’t expect things to match up perfectly; I don’t like being too predictable.

Announcement post.
\o/ Here we go again!
Second!
Is there a special reason for this to be still a hidden post?
Mostly because it’s easier for me to justify the complete lack of useful content in the post by telling myself that only people who *really* want to come here will visit the page.
I suppose I could throw it up in the menu bar.
Edit: Kay, up.
“who *really* want to come here” == you have to remember or save/bookmark the link somewhere
<3
(I messed up my first attempt in replying to your comment, feel free to delete it)
I actually had to google the page name a few times to find it before I remembered to favorite it. Good times.
5/10 is way too good of a rating for Buddy Complex.
What, you weren’t impressed by the bad guy’s inability to kill a random high schooler with his giant weapon of death? C’mon, that kinda scenario always has me on the edge of my seat. Sunrise is the best company ever!
inorite.
almost of that anime subs by watakushi, they’re good subs or not. afraid of downloading some shit.
What?
He’s asking if the subs for Buddy Complex and Witch Craft Works are good.
Buddy Complex: Watchable
Witch Craft Works: Noticed a lot of errors with this one. Prolly not watchable.
Both shows suck though. Witch Craft Works slightly less so.
Oh.
Kamina, Watakushi is an English fansub group only in the sense that the guy who does all the subs kinda sorta knows English. Buddy Complex and Witch Craft Works are rather generic shows that are mostly understandable RAW, so I’d suggest going that route rather than dealing with the guaranteed mistranslations in the provided subs that fuck with your perception of the show.
Or you can wait for a decent release. If you absolutely *need* a translation, Witch Craft Works follows the manga very closely, so grabbing a manga translation and going through the show that way will get you everything you need.
Do you even English?

please make a full of sarcasm and entertaining review again D_S. i miss those times when you’re raging at hadena
lol, it’s all right with me if D_S would be the one to criticize me. I learn from his reviews, so I always leave a note on my script… hidden notes.
I’ll think about it. I’m a bit hesitant cuz it’s a pre-air so I doubt those groups will continue if Crunchyroll picks this up. And I don’t really do 01s.
Oh, hi D_S. I’ll definitely continue doing it, even if CR picks it up.
If you want to get reviewed, you’ll have to give Dark_Sage permission to do your episode 01 release. Otherwise you’ll be at the mercy of the poll order.
come on D_S, your blog is lack of lulz department.
:x
It’s a pre-air so you can consider watakushi’s release (as) a v0. It’ll get v2’d when the show actually starts airing.
I would hope so. Watakushi’s Buddy Complex was a D- script on a good day.
Just watched Dandy. Would not suggest watching the RAW unless your Japanese is sugoi — the show is pretty dependent on dialogue.
As for the show… if you’ve seen the trailers, that’s exactly what you’re getting. So set your expectations accordingly.
I’ll give it a rating when I watch the dub, which will clearly be the superior version. ~_~
>Would not suggest watching the RAW unless your Japanese is sugoi—the show is pretty dependent on dialogue.
Is it correct usage to put a space before and after the em dash just as well as not using any spaces around it? (as in “Would not suggest watching the RAW unless your Japanese is sugoi — the show is pretty dependent on dialogue.”)
Either way works (spaces are preferred though). Technically, a semicolon would be a better option for that sentence, but I like my dashes.
“According to most American sources (such as The Chicago Manual of Style) and some British sources (such as The Oxford Guide to Style), an em dash should always be set closed, meaning it should not be surrounded by spaces. But the practice in some parts of the English-speaking world, including the style recommended by The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage and the AP Stylebook, sets it open, separating it from its surrounding words by using spaces or hair spaces (U+200A) when it is being used parenthetically.” (wiki)
Good info.
Sorry for misleading ya, Xia, it was actually the other way around then.
“misleading” sounds harsh. It’s not like space-style is 100% wrong/right.
All right, let’s just say that whichever way Dark_Sage decides to do it on any given day is right.
Well, to add to that, you wouldn’t really use an em-dash the way you used it there, anyway, as in non-sub writing—like we’re using here—they’re generally used for asides. The semi-colon route would work better, indeed.
Ok. I’ll use spaces around it, then, since it just looks wrong to me without spaces.
So much for grammar.
From what I’ve seen, fansubbers have a nasty habit of using em dashes where commas would suffice. It’s almost like no one knows what an appositive is.
For example:
Jark, an up-and-coming editor, gets all the bitches.
This works perfectly fine. But people do the opposite a pretty frequently.
>a pretty frequently
You tried so hard too.
Recently, My Sister Is Unusual might turn out like To Love Ru Darkness in that it’s only worth watching if you wait for the BDs.
Not really, if you have this very broad imagination… oh wait, you don’t need it, it’s just a matter of censors. Though we all know that the BD is also superb, but sometimes, I get my hopes too high on the BD. So you should also watch the TV series, the censors are funny after all, unlike in TLRD, they’ve got this awful censorship, almost half the screen is gone… oh wait, not half, it’s almost the whole screen, especially on Momo’s naked scene in the bath.
Yeah. Just watched it myself and it’s not all that bad.
The only problem I had with the show is that they’re definitely doing things different from the manga. I hope they have a destination in mind, but I fear this one ain’t gonna end well.
Well, I was hoping the same thing. It looks like that, it won’t be like the one in the manga. Also, to add the fact that it would also get a live action, full of yuri and all.
Live-action yuri in Japan? Don’t hold your breath.
I’ll just leave the link here >> http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=702407
That’s for the MAL thread, while this is the website that announced it >> http://www.sanspo.com/geino/news/20131208/gra13120805190000-n1.html
I can safely say I wasn’t expecting that.
So you don’t do fansub reviews of first episodes, but what about dubs?
On another note: ImoCho aired on AT-X with the same amount of censorship http://dobrochan.com/src/png/1401/FUKING_DROPPED.png
Dubs are not held to the same standard. :s
Nobunagun a 8? lmaooooooooooo. lay off the crack.
I have my reasons. I’ll explain in the W2 post.
“Hamtaro season 2” ( ¬‿¬)
~
So the Wake Up, Girls movie is a prequel to the first episode. That means that there’s 90 minutes total of the idol show to watch today.
Just finished with the movie and I think it was pretty entertaining.
The official subs for Nourin are terrible, even by Funi standards. It’s littered with typos, extremely bizarre word choices and sentences that don’t make sense. I really hope a fansub group picks it up, but it looks like I’ll pass out if I hold my breath.
Aaaand Chihiro and Damedesuyo just released their version. Every time I say something on this site I end up sounding like a bigger and bigger idiot.
Wow, did Hozuki kill D_S’s dog?
I’m sure that would have had more comedy involved than the actual show.
Indeed.
As soon as the anime fatigue sets in, I think you’ll be seeing quite a few more 1s. Hozuki just managed to bring me to that level in its first minute.
I assume you’re planning to watch Sakura Trick, D_S? It’s AOTS, after all.
I’m going to watch everything. I managed it last season, so this one should work out too.
And yeah, it’s a solid show for what it’s going for. I liked it.
And what’s it’s going for is a bunch of girls kissing. On that front they’ve certainly executed well.
But who would watch 24 minutes of cute little girls kissing and hand-holding, right?
Nisekoi doing surprisingly well for what it is. Dem Shaft sparkles, I tell ya.
I like it to be honest. Pretty sure I’d be pretty bored of the backgrounds if they hadn’t have done that kind of style.
The only thing I like about the show is the sparkles. I guess this adaptation was just Shaft’s way of trying to show the world that no matter how bad a source material is, Shaft can make it sugoi.
Smart business move. ETA till they make Cowboy Bebop watchable?
What’s this, you didn’t like Bebop?
I thought it was okay enough, but people treat it like such a sacred cow that I can’t help but knock it down a few pegs.
┐( ̄ー ̄)┌. One of those people in a way, though I don’t praise it like most people do. It’s one of those series I watched along time ago before watching anything else.
Nostalgia in full effect for most people. And tbh, it was good compared to a lot of stuff.
a long*. But yeah, it is good compared to a lot of the stuff that we see now a days and from the stuff earlier back.
It’s good, and the drama is pretty good for an action show, but it isn’t Madoka/EoE/Nichijou good.
D_S: How do you feel about typesetting for things like nicovideo comments? I’m curious how it’ll affect grades for Sonico ep2.
Do what you think is right for your group and worry about the grades afterward.
The video looks really painful, after seeing many comments like that running through the video.
Minor format update.
Looks purdy. More work for you, less thinking for me I guess.
Glad ya like it. It’s actually easier for me this way, in terms of tracking my thoughts at least.
Though I would like to note that while I stand by my opinions, you shouldn’t use them in place of your own. Well, unless you somehow agree with my opinions on all anime, in which case we should probably be besties.
Nice format, makes it look more organized. 完璧!
Japanese words to you too!
Much Japanese
Where is my MS Paint table?
Not watching Saki?
Didn’t watch the previous seasons all the way, so I won’t be watching this one.
It’s not that I don’t want to, but it’s a lot of time to invest in something I only kinda sorta want to watch.
what!? we have an anime that went past the 10/10 mark?
wait… actually is it out of 10? Cause I’m assuming it is.
My ratings are actually out of 100. I’m just very critical.
So are you not gonna be adding the fall shows that run into the winter season on here then?
That would require me to not have silently dropped everything, so that’s correct.
My thoughts on shows I’ve watched up to Ep. 2:
Nobunagun: The animation and plot seems to be direct from 1998 but when MC-chan gets her bloodlust on… ^_^
Zvezda: Lazy-chan is Best Girl. After introducing us to all the characters, can Ep. 3 introduce us to the plot?
Kill La Kill (Ep. 14) – KILL LA KILL CONTINUES TO BE KILL LA KILL
This page indicates you’ve seen episode 4 of No-Rin. The only subs out so far are by Funimation. By your own definition of F-tier reviews, Funimation’s No-Rin is “unwatchable”. You’re ignoring your own advice. What gives?
I think you missed the part where he says “I’m only watching FUNi’s version for the laughs.” And the fact that he’s posting the amount of fail in each episode on his tumblr.
Yup. Though episode 4 was watchable (still not good, but not terribad like before).
I don’t know what exactly was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but they clearly did not like where the complaints were headed. Musta thrown at least one more staff member on it.
I’ll have to get to the W5 post when I sober up tomorrow. Should be… an okay one.
Oh man, Buddyfight is so bad I’m starting to think it was only created ironically.
Are you not watching Tonari no Seki-kun, D_S?
I am (sort of), but including shorts in this list would clog it up.
>Rates episode 5 of Hamatora a 9.
D_S, please.
Well, I’m not really rating episodes so much as rating what I think, overall, of the series at that point (though some series I’m only enjoying in the “what a trainwreck” sense, like Buddyfight). So if a series gives me a relatively dull episode but then throws something crazy at me in the final minutes, I’m gonna be hyped as to the overall direction.
Of course, Hamatora 05 sucked me in with its bold characterization and plot development throughout. And that twist in the first minute of the episode was insane.
I’m surprised you rated the first three episodes of Mahou Sensou so high. I thought the pacing was horrid on top of it being overly complex. The amount of terminology introduced into that show is just unnecessary.
It took me actually falling asleep during the fight sequence of this last episode to let go of all my hopes for the series (I’m a huge shounen nerd). I wouldn’t be surprised if it kept dropping.
>”I’m a huge shounen nerd”
>Dark_Sage 2014
Please kill me.
Don’t worry, I’m only a shounen nerd in that I rewatch Bleach’s Bount arc at least once a year. Top stuff.
What are your thoughts on the ongoing Fall shows? Samurai Flamenco and Kill la Kill in particular.
The only one I’ve been keeping up with is Kill la Kill. It’s definitely good stuff. I dunno if I’d Top 10 it, but I’m all about it.
Everything else got dropped. I don’t have the time to finish series if they don’t align with keeping the site relevant. :P
Too bad about dropping Samurai Flamenco. It gets better every single week.
