    • Other than disqualification notices, I reserve first episodes for TL Parties, so you probably won’t be seeing any other than that Commie review (hopefully).

kokujin-kun may get in with translation reviews, though, because as far as I know he hasn’t placed any restrictions on himself.

  1. I’d like to see some review of Zen Sub’s Inu to Hasami.

First, because it’s an Indonesian fansub group doing English subs.
And second, because I always wished colon cancer upon D_S.

[Hatsuyuki] Makai Ouji – Devils and Realist
    [EveTaku] Rozen Maiden (2013)

And [HorribleSubs] Watamote should be replaced with [Commie] Watamote.

      [A-Destiny] Kingdom 2
      [Commie] Senyuu. 2
[HorribleSubs] Senyuu. 2 (Shirt makes everything worse, so this is legit ;))

[FTW] Tamayura: More Aggressive (I think you said this isout-of-scope since the show’s boring?)

      • Updated. Some notes:

No Senyuu cuz it’s continuing from last season. Don’t see a reason to waste a review slot on it.

No Kingdom cuz that shit is cancer.

No Tamayura, ever. Fuck that show.

  3. I’m either blind or there really isn’t any Hadena release on that list. Would it be possible to include at least one, regardless of the show? Your Hadena reviews are the most hilarious ones I’ve seen in a long time and I can never get enough of those~

  5. Hey Dark_Sage. Are you going to start doing manga scan group comparisons/reviews? I help out shark0week0 by occasionally providing Viz versions or compiling the chapters from different groups.

You could email me if you’d like to discuss.

  6. Updated. I’m cutting out anything with under 10% of the vote and no competing groups. I presume nobody cares about those except for people who want to get off to my brilliant wit. And I have more than enough content coming up for that group.

[HorribleSubs] Fantasista Doll (4%, 51 Votes)
[HorribleSubs] Gifuu Doudou!! Kanetsugu to Keiji (1%, 10 Votes)

  7. Should be able to throw up two Watamote reviews tonight. Commie and FTW’s posts would best be served by reviewing them in parallel, so if I wanna do one, I’m basically forced to do the other at the same time.

Until then, I’m going to be working (because although it doesn’t seem like it, I do have a full-time job) or playing Dragon’s Crown with my local crew. 4p couch co-op FTW.

  8. Hi!

Could you please add my subs of “Choujigen Game Neptune” to your review queue?

    http://purpleheartsubs.wordpress.com/2013/08/10/choujigen-game-neptune-05/

I think I did a better job than Commie. (Even if that’s not too difficult, as they’re mostly only D-Tier.)

Commie’s subs are littered with slang, localisation, changed names and terms and dumb nicknames (like “Iffy” and “Nappy”, err, “Neppy”.)
I’ve removed all that, fixed the translation where it was too far off (especially for the songs), added kanji and romaji with karaoke for the songs and finally also fixed Commie’s poor timing (there were numerous instances where they totally failed to hit the keyframes.)
I’ve also placed plenty of comments in the script, which you can have a look at.

Anyway, thanks for the great reviews you always do!

    • I didn’t even know you were subbing this show. Does anyone else? Typically the fansub community revolves around Nyaa and TokyoTosho as the primary places to put their subs, so that’s where the most informed leechers would go for their subs. Self-promotion is important: having good subs alone and relying on word-of-mouth won’t get your release seen.

Also, DDL should only be used as a secondary method of sharing files. I don’t see any torrents for your release, which means when that DDL provider determined you’ve reached the max amount of downloads, people can’t get your subs. So always throw that shit up to torrents. If you’re not keen on torrents, contact me on IRC and I’ll set you up on my seedbox.

People generally don’t put spaces before em dashes, either.

            • Everybody makes typos, and it doesn’t matter in the comments, sure.

This was much more about pointing out the general attitude, especially if you’re using someone else’s script as base. If you have a beef with Commie, insulting them over using common conventions doesn’t seem like the best angle of attack.

Also, it was a deliberate set-up to allow somebody else to quote the “it’s asked too much” part.

        • Hello, Captain Obvious!
Your reading comprehension is seriously lacking, isn’t it? (Well, if it wasn’t and you had at least half a brain, you probably wouldn’t be in a D-Tier crap group.)
It’s what I wrote in my post, as well as on the About page on my page.
If you had an at least half-way decent editor, there would be no need to clean up behind you.
You also should get yourself a timer that isn’t half-blind and doesn’t miss the keyframes half of the time.

          Reply
          • Yes, I’m aware that you have no idea how to correctly translate, edit, or time. You don’t need to drive the point home with every post you make.

              • Actually, I’m just going to explain it here because watching you bluff in circles for another five posts probably won’t be that entertaining.

The purpose of scene timing is to snap to scene changes. Scene changes can usually be identified by keyframes assuming you encode your keyframes correctly, but not all keyframes are scene changes, and not all scene changes are keyframes. This is aptly demonstrated by the following “corrected” line from your release:

                Dialogue: 0,0:03:07.01,0:03:09.71,Default,,0,0,0,,I wouldn’t be so sure. {Yet another keyframe failure}

This line was correctly snapped to the following scene change in the [Commie] release (which I noticed with some amusement that you renamed to [Rednecks] on your computer), but when you made your “fixes”, you chose to extend it past the scene change in question and snap it to a “fake” keyframe in the following scene, resulting in a scene bleed. So a line which previously disappeared with the scene change now remains awkwardly onscreen for around 300ms after it, distracting the viewer.

Please learn how to time before you criticise the timing of others, because I’ve seen you do nothing but make a massive fool of yourself in every post you’ve made on every site you’ve been to.

                Reply
                • Here’s a screenshot of Aegisub showing that the line in question is properly timed to the keyframe in my subs:
                  http://imgbox.com/acbpNTaD

I’ll tell you a secret: keyframes are the pink lines you see in Aegisub’s audio window. (You *do* know what Aegisub is, do you?)

This isn’t the only line. There are still 21 other keyframe failures left in your subs. Do you want to try to weasel your way out of all these?

                  Reply
                  • Let me tell you another secret, probably the one you don’t know.

Line should be snapped to scenechanges, which are not necessarily keyframes.

Keyframes are what are likely to be scenechanges according to encoder (as in x264 or Xvid). Most timers always use Xvid first pass log file as their keyframe base because most of the time it’s more accurate than x264’s.

                    Reply
                  • And here are two consecutive frames during that line:
                    http://i.imgur.com/33hEjQ3.jpg

Ergo, you fail at timing. Please actually read my post this time and understand that scene timing has an actual purpose behind it as opposed to being a fun game where the objective is to snap to all the purple lines for no particular reason.

Most of the keyframes your “corrected” version snapped to weren’t anywhere near scene changes, probably because you were dumb enough to use the inaccurate premux keyframes instead of making your own with scxvid.

                    Reply
                  • Since you claim to be the best timer available, I decided to give your script timing pass. I’ll post results in a few hours since I’m preoccupied with other stuff at the moment. Look forward to it.

                    Reply
                    • I never claimed to be the “best timer” or anything. I just snapped anything to the keyframes in Aegisub where Commie had failed to do so.
If you want, you can check back my script in Aegisub. All lines fixed have been commented accordingly (22 timing fixes in total).

                    • Thanks.
Still, that means that 10 fixes (about half of them) were done right. Not too bad.

As relying exclusively on Aegisub’s keyframes (as I did with ep. 5) doesn’t seem to be such a good idea, I’ll use a key frame file now, starting with next ep.
How do you generate these keyframe files?

                    • I don’t know whether these 10 fixes actually fixed stuff. I don’t have Commie’s release at hand, meaning I can’t check. But 12 mistakes are still way too much.

I have a script for geenrating keyframes. But I don’t use it for now since it eats at cpu, and I use my backup PC, which was bought in 2003 (meaning if I use it, it literally prevents me from using PC for at least 20 minutes). And it’s encoder’s responsibility to make keyframes.
(By the way, that mistake that Xythar pointed here: http://www.crymore.net/review_queue-summer-2013/comment-page-1/#comment-69185 was a legitimate mistake on your part. That means he was right.)

                    • Could you upload that script somewhere? (With links to required programs.) I’ve got a relatively recent PC and could try it.
About that one line – okay, I’ll believe you. My bad.

                    • >Still, that means that 10 fixes (about half of them) were done right. Not too bad.

Generally speaking, there’s no “right” here. For example, if a line begins 300ms after a scene change, it’s up to the timer whether they’d rather snap it (and have 300ms leadin) or not snap it and have a reasonable amount of leadin. When I time things I usually snap if the line begins less than 200ms after a scene change or ends less than 500ms before a scene change, but it’s largely a matter of personal preference on the timer’s part.

The only things I’d consider wrong are ending/starting the line very close to a scene change (like within a few frames) or extending a line past a scene change.

                    • Also, here’s a guide to making scxvid keyframes like the ones archdeco posted:

                      http://unanimated.xtreemhost.com/scxvid.htm

It comes with a handy batch file that you can just drag and drop the video file on to in order to generate keyframes for it.

I dunno if you want to use it though seeing as how it was written by one of those Commie rednecks.

                    • Well, I use 300/500 for lead-in/lead-out. As Xythar said, it’s a matter of personal preference.

This script is actually the newer version of the one I use, so I guarantee it’s good. Also, can you stop this rednek/chav bullshit?

      • My upload speed is bloody low, so doing torrents would be painful
File1 is one of the few decent hosters where even free users get full speed (and not a measly 50 KB/s like ul.to and co.), and who isn’t trigger happy with deleting files either, so no problems with people getting the files.

    • Shimpan is well known in the German fansub community. He’s running a subgroup called “Erokawaii” (and one called “Pantsu ga daisuki” but they’re apparently the same) and has been around for a long time now.

What makes him sorta “famous” is that he’s been sticking to the old German spelling (it has been revamped between 1996 and 2006 in case you didn’t know) and he even has a blog post on his site stating why the German spelling reform is so evil.

  10. Wanted to do FLag’s review tonight but it’s another shitty fucking release that I have to spend a disproportionate amount of time on with pointing out all the stupid fucking issues. So it’s delayed till tomorrow as I get some sleep.

For anyone on the fence at this very moment, Vivid’s release is the one you should go with. I’ll back that up when FLag’s review comes out.

Apologies if this was already asked.

    • I had a look through the script real quick to look at grammar and such. Make of it what you will.

02:55 – “I’m always thirsty for your chocolate!” (shouldn’t that be ‘hungry’?)

04:10 – “You won’t look at other girls anymore, understand?” (pretty sure it’s ‘any more’)

06:39 – “How could you ruin my hopes like that!?” (the only expression I know of like this is ‘dashing one’s hopes’)

07:03 – “Don’t you have a TV recording today?” (if I’m not mistaken, ‘shoot’ is the correct term here since she’s actually in it)

07:20 – “Oh, a compulsory chocolate?” (‘giri’ means ‘obligation’, not ‘compulsory’. ‘Giri-choko’ is on wikipedia for crying out loud)

      Reply
      • First one, as i was explained it, is supposed to be an innuendo.

I tried to make the compulsory->obligatory switch but TL didnt like it because there was a play on words later in the episode where the preisdent is trying to say its that but can only say con- instead of compulsory. Take it or leave it, in my mind the difference between the two words in english is very slim.

    • Crap, misclicked and posted.

10:29 – “I’ve got so much!” (I’d roll with ‘I’ve gotten so much’ but that’s more because the current line feels awkward)

12:35 – “Well, it should be fine to just talk to him how I always do.” (isn’t this supposed to be ‘like I always do’?

17:55 – “I see. Then it makes me all the more happy.” (should be ‘all the happier’)

In short: still things to improve on but then again, there’s no such thing as a flawless fansub.
